I’ve had the pleasure of working with Photo London since its launch in 2015. Having created the ‘Master of Photography’ award for previous winners Sebastião Salgado, Don McCullin, and Taryn Simon, I was thrilled this year to design an original piece of work for another hugely talented photographic artist, Edward Burtynsky. To begin, I spent some time immersing myself in his work, drawn to the birds-eye view he uses and the incredible detail of textures and vibrant colour he captures. Listening to Burtynsky describe the photographs as a documentation of what we as humans do to our earth really inspired me to keep the design clean, simple and a reflection of his ideas.  “We come from nature. There is an importance to having a certain reverence for what nature is because we are connected to it. If we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves.”– Edward Burtynsky The choice of materials was crucial in accentuating both the origins of the idea and the bold feel of the design. As this collection of Burtynsky’s work is about industry and mining, I wanted to use tough, uncompromising materials. Sterling silver sheet was manipulated into a column with one curved edge, alongside Jesmonite, a composite resin that is commonly used to repair buildings and recreate architectural details. I also used ‘Old Terracotta’ to highlight the rich earthly tones featured in Burtynky’s work, with a stone grain to add texture.   By enhancing the blue rhodium plating on the vertical curve, a high polish finish brings out the deep uneven petrol colour, reminiscent of some of his works with oil spills. A deconstruction of the Photo London logo is based on the top of the award, as if inlaid into the Jesmonite, encouraging the viewer to look at the award from above, much like in the artist’s work.  It’s a continued honour to work with Photo London and create tactile, expressive pieces of work that recognise some of the world’s best photographers and artists. We had the pleasure of working with stylist Alex Kristal and photographer Nick Rochowshi last year on this creative shoot for our Ivana and Georgina Bangles.  Alex created the concept using a combination of fresh clay and Clay Works Plasters - all in our branding colours. We created three boards in each colour way (Conch, Buff and Stone) to make a set backdrop. We also used three types of clay to complement and contrast the backdrop. Using a cheese cutter, we dragged the cut line to create more surface texture almost like a textile.  Manipulating the natural light though the boards, Nick elegantly lit the bangles and accentuated the textures in both the plaster and clay.  We're so pleased with the stunning results and hope to work with both Alex and Nick again in the future. We exhibited at NY NOW for the first time this February with the British Allied Trade Federation and DIT. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Photo London for three years, since its launch in 2015. Having had the honour of creating the ‘Master of Photography’ award for icons Sebastião Salgado and Don McCullen, I was thrilled to be asked this year to design an original piece of work for another hugely influential artist: Taryn Simon.  Simon is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, text, sculpture and performance. Guided by an interest in systems of categorisation and classification, her practice involves extensive research into the power and structure of secrecy and the precarious nature of survival. To kick-start my thought process, I spent some time immersing myself in her work, and was drawn to the way she uses grids to categorise her work. Their geometric nature was something that resonated with our own design ethos, and these in turn became the frame for composing the fragmented ‘P’ and ‘L’ from Photo London’s identity.    Simon’s work explores the link between language and the visual world, and in  ‘Paperwork and the Will of Capital’ she recreates the floral arrangements that were present at historic international agreements. Reminiscent of old-fashioned slides or polaroids, I took inspiration from these in the decision to split the identity across five slides that when layered, recreate the image as a whole.  The choice of materials for this award was crucial in accentuating the bold feel of the design. Simon’s work is often shocking and sad in a detached, emotionless way, so with this in mind I wanted to use tough, uncompromising materials. Stainless steel creates slim and precise slides that are strong and rigid, in combination with the subtle richness of dark walnut.         By polishing only the outside edges of these slides, the blades become highlighted and defined. The shapes appear to be abstract, but come together to form the Photo London identity when you look straight on at the award. Encouraging the viewer to investigate different angles was something I felt came through strongly in Simon’s work, especially in the unseen, classified environments she works in.  It is a continued honour to work with Photo London and create tactile, expressive pieces of work that recognise some of the world’s best photographers. Those of you who follow us on Instagram will already know that we took a trip to beautiful Lisbon in January. I have to say, within half a day we’d fallen in love with the place; much the same as we did in the reminiscent surroundings of San Francisco. With clean, crisp air and wonderful sunshine, it was the perfect antidote to a grey January. Needless to say, we’ve come back truly inspired and ready to design new pieces. Here are a few of the highlights.    sintra Having seen the photographs of the palaces in various guides, I knew we had to go. Uber is such a great tool for city breaks, as this is a half hour drive away towards the west coast (only €25). Uber drivers are also completely unbiased, so great for tips and even better when they're as friendly and helpful as the Portuguese. Our driver urged us to go straight to the 'Parque e Palácio Nacional da Pena’ a bright yellow palace placed on top of the mountain, set against the vibrant blue sky. The range of tiles used is incredible, from geometric forms to imitation coral and of course, lots of the classic colourful flat Portuguese variety. The views are breath-taking and continually evolve as you wonder through the palace and over the terraces.          Again, we took our drivers advice and followed the signs to the Valley of the Lakes (really three lovely ponds) and over to the stables. It seems tourists don’t venture this far so we had the countryside to ourselves and few gardeners tending the land. This was one of the real highlights of our trip, this area was more like a Californian ranch than a Portuguese mountainside. With a few stone benches dotted around the paths, we sat down to take in the unbelievably fresh air, the sounds of the birds and the occasional neigh from the horses.     Boutique Hotel H10  Normally we try and book an AirBnB but when it’s this easy and this beautiful it’s hard to resist. We found this hotel through the BA sale, which was a great deal. Lovely, light and airy rooms with super king beds, it would be hard not to relax here. The roof boasts a terrace bar, which unfortunately doesn’t serve during the winter months, but you can order from the ground floor and take your drinks up there for stunning views across the city and down to the sea. The staff were brilliant and very friendly, we’ve already agreed we’d stay there again.       H10 Duque de Loulé, Avenida Duque de Loulé, Lisbon, Portugal     Castelo de S. Jorge Be prepared for a steep walk, but it’s worth it. With views over the city and the sparkling water ahead you’ll be glad you spent the €7 entry. And with seating along the front of the gardens you can enjoy the views as long as you like.      Timeout Market This is a great option if you’re in a group with lots of different preferences and tastes. Just next to ‘Cais do Sodré’ the markets’ surround is lined with kitchens with a variety of cuisines including traditional Portuguese dishes, pan asian and sushi spots. The majority of the space is taken up with big communal tables, mostly couples and families sampling small plates and taking the advantage of the great wines on offer.    Av. 24 de Julho 49, 1200-109 Lisboa, Portugal    El Clandestino If you like Mexican food, this place is a must. With delicious margaritas and guacamole - you can’t go wrong. We shared two starters and two mains which was more than enough. I’m thrilled to officially introduce our brand new visual identity, created in collaboration with the talented designer Stevie Wilcox.      The project began last year, with the ambition to create a new look and feel that would work across a wide range of printed materials. Using sketchbooks and design work as a starting point, we took the geometrical influences in our core collection to inspire the new logotype and centrepiece of the brand.       Packaging was a key focus for us from the very start. Featuring the muted colour palette, we carefullly chose paper stock from Fedrigoni for each of the different box sizes and complemented it with a print finish that creates a beautifully tactile experience when opening your new jewellery for the first time.         Business cards, care notes and postcards complete the full range, each with their own individual print finishes and styling. As with all creative work, it’s the attention to detail that makes the difference and we wanted every element of the new brand to feel considered and crafted as a collective body of work.        It’s incredibly exciting to see the work come to life, and more importantly, continue to make your experience of owning our jewellery a memorable one.
